| Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is also known as methyl sulfone or dimethylsulfone (DMSO2). It is an odorless and almost tasteless compound created from dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). DMSO has long been used for a variety of problems including sprains, bruises, contusions, arthritic joints, disc disease, back problems, and even internal conditions such as liver and kidney disease. DMSO has been used topically, orally and by injection. |

DMSO's major problem has always been the degree of purity of the product and the bitter taste and rotten egg smell generated from its use. MSM seems to have most of the same properties as DMSO, but it has no odor and taste problems. It is a reasonably inexpensive compound, making it more likely to be cost effective for some conditions.
Indications:
In part, MSM owes its effectiveness to its ability to donate or provide sulfur molecules to the body. Sulfur in needed by most of the body's metabolic pathways. It plays an important role in:
- Joint support and joint cartilage
- Modulation of the body's immune system
- Is important for the body's inflammatory pathways
- Is necessary for the Glutathione Cycle; glutathione is the body's primary antioxidant as well as controlling free radical formation and detoxification
- Is required by the Kreb's Citric Acid Cycle; this metabolic pathway provides the body with utilizable energy as well as controlling the Electron Transport Chain, a system in the body needed to harmful free radicals and oxides into safe detoxified metabolites.
MSM in Animals:
MSM works well in alleviating arthritic conditions, including hip and elbow dysplasia, osteoarthritis, and sprains. It has good effectiveness in treating back conditions, including disc disease, wobbler's (Cervical or neck associated paralysis of the hind legs). It may potentially help with other conditions including autoimmune diseases and allergies,
Dosage:
The dosage varies from 10-30 mg per pound body weight. MSM to date has shown no toxicity at reasonable dosages.
Dogs
- 1-25 lbs.: 250 mg (1/4 of a 1000 mg capsule) 1-2 times daily
- 25-50 lbs.: 500 mg (1/2 of a 1000 mg capsule) 1-2 times daily
- 50-100 lbs: 1000 mg (1 capsule) 1-2 times daily.
Cats
- 1/8 capsule 1-2 times daily placed in food
Birds
- A small pinch (1/32) on food daily
- 1 capsule in 12 ounce drinking water
