Comments:

Diarrhea in dogs and cats is common. Gastriplex has been found to be one of the best general therapies we know of at WellVet.com for acute or chronic diarrhea.

Some animals will have chronic soft stools or diarrhea, which can be either relatively constant or on a day-to-day basis. Others will have frequent bouts of diarrhea that occur from several times a year to several times each month. It is common for dogs and cats to have an increased sensitivity to foods, where any change of food will lead to gastrointestinal problems. Frequently, one can see diarrhea complicated with bacteria or parasites (Giardia, for example). All of these animals have in common a weak digestive tract, often chronically inflamed and with various degrees of maldigestion. This formula is intended to help heal these chronically inflamed intestinal tracts.

Gastriplex is designed to support and heal the entire gastrointestinal system, including the stomach, small intestines and colon.

Glutamine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is the preferred fuel for small intestine mucosal cells (and, to a lesser extent, the large intestinal mucosal cells). Glutamine has been shown to treat diarrhea in many species, including people and calves.

Slippery elm contains viscid mucilage polysaccharide which soothe the mucous membranes of the gut.

Licorice heals stomach ulcers and reduces inflammation throughout the gut. (Click here to read about licorice; use your web browser's back button to return to this article.)

Lactobacillus is well-known to promote a healthy microbial flora of the intestinal tract. Unfortunately, Lactobacillus acidophilus will mostly be destroyed in the acidic environment of the stomach. Lactobacillus sporogenes safely passes through the stomach and sporulates in the small intestine, producing L(+)lactic acid, which is metabolized to glycogen, creating a healthy micro environment for normal gut flora. (For more information on Lactobacillus sporogenes, click here; use your web browser's back button to return to this article.)

Saccharomyces boulardii is a beneficial yeast. Abnormal yeast, including Candida, will often play a role in intestinal dysfunction. Adding a beneficial yeast should decrease the levels of Candida and thus help improve intestinal function. (For additional information on chronic Candida problems, click here; use your web browser's back button to return to this article.)

N-acetyl D-Glucosamine has been shown to be of benefit in treating inflammatory bowel disease and colitis in some species.

Quercetin enhances cell growth and turnover, and reduces lipid peroxidation and membrane damage. Quercetin is a flavonoid, and flavonoids can reduce chronic inflammation as is encountered in the intestinal tract.

Gastriplex Ingredients and Rationale:

Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B5).................25 mg

Pantothenic acid is converted to Coenzyme A in the colon. Coenzyme A is required for normal carbohydrate and fat metabolism, and in the synthesis of steroids. It is considered especially beneficial with food intolerance.

Folic Acid..................................................100 mcg

Mucosal cells divide rapidly; folic acid is required for DNA synthesis for new cells. Folic acid is commonly deficient in many animals with chronic intestinal disorders.

L-Glutamine...............................................200 mg

Glutamine is the primary energy source for the mucosal cells of the intestinal tract, primarily the small intestines. It has been shown to be very helpful with inflammatory bowel disease, as it helps stimulate the development of new mucosal cells and optimizes existing mucosal cell function.

Saccharomyces boulardii................................50mg

Saccharomyces is a beneficial yeast that acts as a probiotic. It is placed into this formula to enhance beneficial yeast and reduce harmful yeasts such as Candida

Slippery Elm..............................................200 mg

Slippery elm, Ulmus rubra, is excellent for healing inflammation and ulcers. The mucilages in slippery elm will act as a bandage to heal the intestinal lining cells

Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice (DGL)..................50 mg

Licorice is an excellent herb to reduce inflammation and heal ulcers of the stomach and small intestine.

N-Acetyl D-Glucosamine............................250 mg

Glutamine provides the energy cells need to function, N-acetyl D-Glucosamine strengthens the intestinal cells. It is a major component of mucosal lining cells, and is particularly important in treating Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Quercetin Chalcone....................................50 mg

Quercetin is a flavonoid that can reduce chronic inflammation. It will improve cell turnover and reduce oxidative damage to the intestinal lining.
