During it's normal daily metabolism, the body performs a number of oxidative reactions that produce free radicals and toxic oxides. Free radicals must be bound to various compounds, often proteins, for removal or reuse. Oxidative products, including the body's most important antioxidant, glutathione, must be returned to their reduced form to allow the Phase I and Phase II detoxification pathways to efficiently function. Without antioxidants, the body will rapidly deteriorate.

Many disease processes produce additional stress on the body's oxidative pathways. Aging is now being thought of as a process where the body begins to fail in its ability to produce sufficient amounts of its antioxidants, resulting in excessivecellular damage.

Small Animal Antioxidant is designed for animals with an increased oxidative burden that need a supplement with maximum antioxidant potential. It provides the benefit of powerful antioxidants not normally found in the basic vitamin A,C,E formulas on the market. Small Animal Antioxidant is ideal for the pet who needs extra antioxidant support, such as dogs competing in athletic competitions, highly active dogs, geriatric pets, and companion animals living in a particularly toxic environment.

Because of the range of antioxidant ingredients, this formula has particular affinity for a number of organs and tissues. Small Animal Antioxidant promotes strength and health of the eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, lungs, skin, and neurological and immune systems. The effects of Small Animal Antioxidant are due to direct free radical scavenging, enhancement of the animal's own natural antioxidant system, and the protective effects of its various constituents on multiple organs in the body.

This formula is designed for use in many different situations, including hospitalization, recovery from a chronic disease, and chronic inflammatory conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, Lime disease, and allergic and atopic conditions

    Detailed actions of each ingredient:

    1. Vitamin C
Although made in the body, conditional deficiencies can occur in times of stress. Ascorbate may also act as an antioxidant against oxidative stress. Ascorbate (the anion of ascorbic acid) is required for a range of essential metabolic reactions in all animals and plants.
    2. Vitamin E (d-Alpha Tocopheryl)
Vitamin E is a fat soluble, antioxidant vitamin, so it can enter into places in the body that have a high concentration of fat, such as cell membranse. Antioxidant support in cell membranes keeps cells functioning and optimal capacity. As an antioxidant, vitamin E acts as a peroxyl radical scavenger, preventing the propagation of free radicals in tissues, by reacting with them to form a tocopheryl radical which will then be oxidized by a hydrogen donor (such as Vitamin C) and thus return to its reduced state.
    3. trans-Resveratrol
Resveratrol is found in the skin of grapes and other fruits. It is an important antioxidant in inhibition of the negative effects of the aging process. There is some evidence that it has a special affinity for the cardiovascular system (note the many studies showing moderate consumption of red wine lowers heart attack risk). There is also some evidence supporting an anti-cancer action in mice.
    4. Milk Thistle
Silybum marianum (milk thistle) has been shown to have clinical applications in the treatment of toxic hepatitis, fatty liver, cirrhosis, ischemic injury, radiation toxicity, and viral hepatitis via its antioxidative, anti lipid peroxidative, antifibrotic, anti inflammatory, immunomodulating, and liver regenerating effects. Silymarin has been reported to protect liver cells from a wide variety of toxins, including acetaminophen, ethanol, carbon tetra chloride, and D galactosamine. Studies also demonstrated that silymarin increased hepatocyte protein synthesis.
    5. Carrot Powder
Carrot powder is added as a convenient way to feed carrots to your companion animal. Carrots have a multitude of antioxidants including a variety of carotenoids. Carrotenoids have been shown to improve the eyes, can help prevent cell degeneration, help improve immunity, prevent infections, strengthen neurological function, have anti-cancer activity, and can strengthen blood vessel strength.
    6. Grape Seed Extract Grape seed extract is related to Pycnogenol (Pine Bark Extract), and both are called proanthocyanidins; powerful antioxidants used for centuries for these functions: enhance immune systems, anti-cancer activity, anti-aging, support blood vessel strength (its "anti-scurvy" effects), enhanced wound healing, liver support, and reduce the incidence of heart disease.
    7. Curcumin Curcumin, also called Turmeric, has strong liver supportive activities. It's hepatoprotective activity is likely due to its strong antioxidant activity and potential to maintain the body's normal inflammatory response. Binding curcumin to the hepatoprotective phospholipid phosphatidylcholine (as Meriva) not only increases bioavailability but enhances its hepatoprotective effects. It also has important antioxidant activity in the intestinal system, muscles, joints and eyes.
    8. Glutathione, N-acetyl-Cysteine, and Glutamic Acid Very important for liver support through their actions to enhance Detoxification

We consider it one of the best antioxidant for animals. To understand the individual components in this formula, view the Rationale tab.
