Glutagenics is formulated to support the stomach and intestinal tract. Many dogs and cats have symptoms of gastrintestinal disease. These include vomiting, diarrhea, poor digestion and maldigestion. By proactively supporting the stomach and small intestines in animals that show recurrent issues around digestion, your companion animal might avoid chronic gastrointestinal disease.

The three herbs in Glutagenics are glutamine, deglycyrrhizinized licorice (DGL), and aloe vera. Some research data support our belief that these supplements can support and heal the stomach and intestinal tract. A healthy intestinal lining is essential for proper digestion, immune function, and liver function.

This is a good product to consider in birds with inflammation of the cloaca.

Glutagenics has significant amounts of glutamine. Glutamine is an amino acid that is used to produce energy for intestinal cells and well as being key in producing the proteins for intestinal cells.

DGL is shown to decrease inflammation in the stomach.

Aloe vera is a cooling herb that can be used to decrease inflammation.

Glutagenics was created to support a healthy intestinal lining, which is crucial for a healthy digestive system, immune function and overall health.

    L-Glutamine

Chronic diarrhea, animals that have food allergies, those that are sensitive to food chances, inflammatory bowel disorders, colitis, and frequent bouts with loose formed, mucous coated or watery diarrhea are all common events in veterinary medicine. The most abundant amino acid in the circulation and in the intracellular amino acid pool, glutamine is the primary vehicle for nitrogen transfer between tissues. Although it is synthesized in the body from glutamic acid, glutamine is considered by some to be a conditionally essential amino acid due to a greatly increased demand for glutamine in catabolic states, for example, starvation, surgery, injury, and infection. This demand may not be met by metabolic synthesis. Stored principally in skeletal muscle, glutamine is released as needed and is taken up primarily by the GI tract, where it is used as the preferred fuel for enterocytes of the small intestine.

Large bowel mucosal cells (colonocytes) also utilize glutamine, although butyrate is their principal fuel. Glutamine supplementation has been shown to increase small bowel mucosal thickness, villus height, and nitrogen content, and may preserve the integrity and /or speed the healing of the intestinal mucosa. Glutamine also enhances gut immune function, as it decreases bacterial translocation across the gut wall, increases secretory IgA levels and decreases bacterial adherence to enterocytes.

Glutamine was found to be beneficial in calves with diarrhea . Other uses for glutamine might include chronically ill patients that are sustaining a long lasting catabolic state, following intestinal surgery, as a supplement during endurance training, intestinal permeability disorders, hepatic disease, and immune boosting of lymphocytes and interferon.

It supplies large quantities of the amino acid glutamine, which serves as a source of fuel and a precursor for growth to the quickly dividing cells of the intestinal lining. Glutagenics by Metagenics also provides a highly concentrated licorice extract, which was processed to remove glycyrrhizin (a component that is known to cause adverse reactions in some people.

    Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice

Licorice has been used for centuries as a medicinal remedy to treat a variety of illness ranging from a simple cold to liver disease. It is believed to act as a demulcent (soothing agent) and expectorant (mucous expeller). Although it is largely beneficial, licorice that includes glycyrrhiza can have serious side effects. This is why Metagenics has removed the glycyrrhiza from the licorice in its Glutagenics Powder. This type of licorice doesn't seem to have the same side effects. It also far less likely to cause diarrhea. DGL is very helpful in healing stomach ulcers.

    Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is excellent as an antiinflammatory herb that cools the stomach, supports the immune system and decreases mucosal damage due to acid indigestion. In Chinese medicine it is considered a powerful Yin Tonic. Since it is soothing and healing it can help detoxification as well as cleansing the digestive tract.

Glutagenics is designed to support the stomach and intestinal tract. Some symptoms in animals that might respond to this product include:

    • When starting to eat, your dog suddenly loses interest in food (acidity in the stomach flairs up when food is consumed)
    • A history of having intestinal dysbiosis and "leaky gut syndrome"
    • Frequent bouts of loose stools or diarrhea
    • Bad breath (always have your veterinarian examine your pets teeth if they have bad breath)
    • Stomach or small intestinal ulcers
    • Pancreatitis, supports the inflammation of the stomach and intestines that develops with pancreatitis
