Indications: This is a Chinese herbal formula designed to balance the immune system and to treat autoimmune diseases. This formula is an adaptation of Traditional Chinese medical approaches to the group of inflammatory diseases that we now recognize as autoimmune diseases. From a Traditional Chinese Medical view, this is primarily a formula to engender or tonify the Liver and the Kidneys; two organs that play a major role in immunity (Ligustrum, Epimedium, Rehmannia, Achyranthes). It also has herbs that nurture the blood, which helps heal inflamed tissues (Salvia, Red peony). Studies have shown that some herbs in this formula regulate the immune system, enhance suppressor T-cell function, inhibit antibody production (Chin-Chiu, Ching-hao). Licorice is used both to balance the formula and moisten the body, as well as to help enhance cortisol levels in the body (cortisol, a natural steroid produced in the body is antiinflammatory).
