Indications:
The body’s digestive system evolved with and expects to have plant enzymes available to aid itself with digestion. Cooking at temperatures of even only 118oF will inactivate the natural plant enzymes found in food. The body must then produce more digestive enzymes or fail to digest food properly. Beneficial bacteria will also aid in enzymatic digestion.
Pancreatic enzymes are only active in a narrow pH range, a slightly acidic environment. Pancreatic enzymes are are destroyed in the highly acidic stomach. Optimal pH, which may not always be present in the intestinal tract. Plant source digestive enzymes are bioactive in a wide range of pH conditions (pH 3.0-9.0), making them more effective with patients with digestive problems. Plant source digestive enzymes can be added to the diet through the addition of raw foods or supplemented through one of many of the different products available.
However, this issue is not so clear. Pancreatic enzymes are the major source of digestion for the body. Pancreatic enzyme supplements (Dipan 9) often work more effectively, and although they cost much more, they may be more effective with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. You can use pancreatic enzymes by applying them to food to predigest the food, and sometimes they may be very effective if taken orally as well, in some cases of poor digestion (even though much of them are inactivated in the stomach). It is reasonable to consider using either enzyme supplement, and switching if one is not working as well as the other.
Symptoms of animals that might indicate a need for digestive enzymes include intestinal gas, voluminous stools, undigested food in the feces, and food remaining in the stomach for prolonged periods of time (the dog that vomits some food in the morning after last nights meal). Allergies often improve with enzyme supplementation. It is possible that the incidence of many types of cancer will be decreased through the use of digestive enzymes.
Digestive enzymes can be given with meals to help with food digestion. With other patients, it is more effective to give enzymes between meals to help cleans and detoxify the gastrointestinal system.
Why CarbohydrEnz?
Almost all digestive enzyme products tend to cause irritation to the stomach, rarely cause ulcers, and commonly worsen an animal that already has ulcers in the stomach. CarbohydrEnz is a plant based digestive enzyme supplement that aids in digestion of food without causing gastric irritation common with other digestive enzymes. CarbohydrEnz has fewer proteolytic enzymes, the enzymes that tend to eat away at the stomach lining. This product is indicated for all animals that need enzymes but:
- Are vomiting prior to beginning digestive enzymes
- Animals that have a tendency to vomit easily
- Animals that start vomiting after beginning digestive enzymes
Other Uses for CarbohydrEnz:
Dosage:
Cats:
- 1/2 pill twice daily
Dogs:
- 1/2 pill for each 20 lbs body weight, twice daily
Birds:
- A pinch twice daily on food, large birds 1/4 capsule twice daily
